Introduction to Interpreting in TV/Film Production

Have you received emails and texts about interpreting for TV production companies and you delete them because you've never been in any kind of media situation before? If yes, then this is the course for you.

A one-day introductory workshop (earning you 8 ASLI CPD points) exploring working with a Deaf director/producer in a TV environment aimed at all interpreters regardless of your level being JTIs, TIs and MRSLIs.

This workshop will be led by Joe Collins, a native Deaf BSL user with over 20 years experience of working in the Media with a variety of companies including the BBC, Tyne Tees TV and Remark! Productions. Joe has a wide range of experience from being a Runner, to Researcher to Assistant Producer and a Director (terms that we will explain in the workshop) and he has worked with many interpreters over this time.

Also on hand will be an interpreter, Kathy Yeoman, who has worked with Joe and others in the Media and Arts fields for the last 8 years. She’ll be there to give an interpreter’s perspective and answer any questions you may have.

This course aims to teach everything that Joe would want an interpreter to know before they worked with him in a media environment. If this course proves successful and the feedback from participants is good then we have more planned on:

Writing accurate transcripts of BSL users for TV broadcast
Working in dubs and sound mixes with Deaf directors/editors
In-vision interpreting - tips and try it out!

A certificate of attendance will be provided for ASLI CPD evidence. Your attendance on the day will give you 8 ASLI CPD points (and possibly extra for travel if you are from over 50 miles outside London).

Dates:

The course will be run on both Friday 3rd September and Saturday 4th September 2010 to accommodate those Interpreters who prefer week-ends or week-days. You will only need to attend on one of the days. The Course times will be from 10am to 4.30pm.

Course Venue:

The Ability Media Centre
56 Southwark Bridge Road
London. SE1 0AS

The nearest bus route is the 344 and the nearest tube/rail station is London Bridge. When you exit, make sure you are on the Borough Market side and not the London Dungeon side.

Fees:

Fee for ASLI members (Full, Associate and Student) - £140 (includes Tea/Coffee and a Buffet Lunch)
Fee for non-ASLI members - £170 (includes Tea/Coffee and a Buffet Lunch)

Contact:

Please email Joe with your interest for the course and you will be asked to complete a short booking form which includes an overview of the day and the course schedule. We are aiming to limit the numbers on each day to either 10-12 people to ensure individual attention.
