Do you want to become a better BSL teacher?
1) Welcome
The University of Central Lancashire is offering a national BSL Teacher Training Course. This course is taught in BSL and addresses all the needs of deaf people wishing to qualify as BSL teachers. The new course will start in April 2010.
2) Course content and qualifications
The BSL Teacher Training Course covers three key areas:
- Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (PTLLS)
- Certificate in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector Associate Teacher Award (CTLLS)
- A Continuing Professional Development (CPD) module in Applied Sign Linguistics
On successful completion of the BSL Teacher Training Course you will be eligible to apply to the Institute for Learning (IfL) to gain Associate Teacher Status Learning and Skills.
3) Prerequisites
The BSL Teacher Training Course is open to all teachers, trainers and tutors who work in the Further Education sector. All participants need to hold a Level 3 qualification, e.g. an NVQ Level 3 qualification in British Sign Language (or equivalent). All participants will be interviewed and undertake a short assessment. If you are unable to come to Preston for the interview we can arrange for you to be interviewed via webcam.
4) Teaching and Assessment
The course will be taught in BSL. The delivery of the course is via blended learning – a mixture of block teaching at UCLan and distance learning at home. Teaching practice will be in your own institution, where you will be supported by supervisors and mentors. Assessment activities are continuous and students will present some coursework in BSL and some coursework in English.
5) Fees
In the academic year 2010/2011 the BSL Teacher Training Course will be offered free of charge subject to attendance and completion of assignments.
