Friday 25 April 2014
 (the day before Deaf Day!)

£100 for the day, including lunch

3-hour short courses – all running both morning & afternoon

Choose two from:

1. Sign Language acquisition & bilingualism in deaf children - Kate Rowley, DCAL
This workshop will look into how deaf children develop sign language and how this is similar/different to how hearing children acquire spoken language.  Communication strategies with signing deaf children and things to think about when interpreting for children will also be discussed.

2. Deaf & hearing interpreters coworking – understanding our roles  - Clive Mason RSLT
The aim of this workshop is to introduce the concept of Deaf and hearing co-working (as interpreters and translators) with the view to better understand each other’s role in order to give a professional and enhanced service.

3. Introduction to interpreting in mental health - Rob Chalk RSLI
This 3-hour workshop will take you through a deaf person’s experience of mental ill health through the eyes of an interpreter. We will look at coping strategies, common jargon and an overview of a national service that provides care for mentally ill deaf people.

4. Strategies for interpreting in healthcare settings - Russell Aldersson RSLI
This course begins with an exploratory discussion of some of the key issues for interpreters working in healthcare settings followed by a practical element that sets out to consider what strategies can be implemented to minimise difficulties in the pursuit of effective communication.  We will approach this with the notion of interpreters being cross-cultural mediators and communication facilitators and as such, an active participant in the interpreter-mediated healthcare setting.

5. From BSL to English - improving your voiceover - Kate Furby RSLI

This voiceover workshop will focus on sharing practical strategies that will support newer interpreters to feel more confident working from BSL into English in a variety of settings.  The workshop will explore both vocal delivery and lexical choice through group discussion and activity.

6. Technical voice production - Vernon Thompson, City Lit drama dept
Technical Voice is a 3 hour introduction to improving the tone and quality of your voice for increased confidence in communication. In this session we will briefly cover the concepts of physical alignment, breathing (lower abdominal and lower intercostal), placing the voice forward and the muscularity of articulation. It will be taken by Vernon Thompson, Head of Programme in the Drama Dance and Speech department.

7. English modification for CSWs - Maureen Jefferson, BATOD
The aim of this workshop is to look at where we should be considering modification of language, the language areas we should consider modifying and how to hopefully achieve better accessibility to both spoken and written language.  The main aim must be to give equality of access to those students who have difficulty accessing and processing language.
The workshop will consist of a powerpoint presentation, discussion, practical work and question and answer.  Please bring examples of written language that you have had to modify or ones that you are finding difficult to make accessible for your students
